Due to the unique and diverse geography of the area, the Panhandle has many great
state parks and national forests.
St. George Island State Park and St. Joseph Peninsula State Park - An excellent representation of the gulf's diverse variety of shells washes up onto these beaches daily. Apalachicola National Forest - This long-leaf and slash pine forest also has open savannahs that are home to some of North America's most beautiful carnivorous plants. Don't forget to stop by Apalachicola Bay to sample its fresh oysters, touted by many chefs as being the best in the world. Blackwater River State Park - The Blackwater is one of the cleanest sand-bottomed rivers in the Americas. Canoe the river or hike the nature trails and see some of the Panhandle's most notable plant species and wildlife.
